Before going on my trip to Europe, I often heard people talk about the Eurail Pass and how amazing it was to travel by train between the cities but to be honest, I didn’t really have a clear idea what it was. It was only when I started doing research for my own Eurotrip that I really understood how the whole concept of the pass work so hopefully this article & the videos below can help you out with making your planning a bit easier!

What is a Eurail Pass?

For those who have no idea what it is…well… it’s basically a pass that allows you to commute by train throughout Europe (there are a few exceptions, like UK for example). You have the flexibility of choosing different passes that best suit your needs such as the Global Pass, the Select Pass, and the One Country Pass. Check out my video below to learn more about it!

Is it worth buying it?

Now that you know a little bit more about the pass, the next question that comes to mind is… should you buy it? For me, I wanted to make sure it was going to save us money so if it cost the same as single tickets, I’d probably won’t buy the pass! So to better understand how I came to my decision, watch my video below! Hopefully you’ll find this useful!

(Here’s the link mentioned in the video regarding the useful map to help you determine if the pass is worth it or not on Rick Steve’s page!)

Are Reservations Required?

Another really important thing I wasn’t sure about when I was doing my research is, how do I know if reservations are required? To verify that, you can go on the Eurail website or their Rail Planner App (I’ll talk more about this in the next section! 😉 ) to see the train schedule. These tools are able tell you right away if you need a reservation or not. An extra fee is required if reservations are needed but the cool thing is, you can also prevent taking trains with reservations by simply choosing the “Avoid reservations” option. For more info, watch the video below!

What is the Rail Planner App & is it useful?

As I mentioned in the section above, one method of checking if reservations are required is through the Rail Planner App but I definitely suggest downloading this app before your trip since it has some other functions which sure came in handy for me!

Hopefully I was able to help you clarify a bit what the Eurail Pass is and if there’s something you’re still unsure of, feel free to leave me a comment below! I’ll try to answer them as much as I can! And if you want to find out how you can save even more on this pass, check out my other page here!
